Apple Barn Starts Fund to Support Health Awareness
BENNINGTON — The Apple Barn has established a fund to support programs, which will offer the community an opportunity
to learn more about the important role of communication in medical decision-making and quality of care.
Illness doesn't just happen to one person. It impacts patients, families and friends.
Lia Diamond, proprietor of the Apple Barn, founded "Spread Your Wings and Fly," a nonprofit organization, in memory
of her mother, Lucila Albinder, who died of cancer in 2004.
Albinder loved the arts and made an art of living. It is in this spirit that Diamond has chosen to honor her mother's
life by incorporating a gallery, "A Spotlight on Art," in the Apple Barn. Local and regional artist's works are
exhibited and are for sale. It is fitting that a portion of proceeds from the sales in the gallery will be donated to
the Center for Communication in Medicine, which is the newly launched education division of the Institute of Medical
Humanism. The Center's community forums serve to educate all those within the sphere of illness on the complex role
of communication in patient care.
"The patient's voice is so important," said Diamond, "and so are the concerns of family members. Caring for my mother
I've come to realize how important it is for all of us to communicate effectively with doctors. My mother understood
how the arts can promote healing and would be pleased to know that the proceeds from the sale of the gallery's art
will benefit our community of patients and families."
The Apple Barn, Route 7 south, is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. For more information about "Spread Your Wings
and Fly," contact Lia Diamond.
